What is the difference between Maindee Judo Club and Duffryn Judo Club?
There is little difference between the two clubs, as both are run by Maindee Judo Club instructors.
Sensei Steven Morgan, Nidan is the Chief Instructor for both clubs, although Sensei Gareth Morgan Shodan is the main instructor for Duffryn Judo Club. DJC is an extension of MJC to add additional training options for students and to make Judo available to students in the local area surrounding Duffryn.
Am I contracted to MJC or DJC?
You are not entering into a contract with either club, although to preserve the ability to maintain the Clubs ability to hire the premises we use a minimum fee is required at the start of each month by students to secure their placement within the club. This allows us the ability to keep the mat fees to a minimum and make it affordable for all.
Do I have to buy a judo suit, and if so do I have to by from the club.
There is no immediate requirement to purchase a Judo suit, although experience teaches us that students will inevitably require one in order to get the best they can out of practicing Judo. Judo suits are available through the club at a discounted rate than normal retail prices, although you are not required to purchase them through the club. Students are requested to wear traditional white Gi's although coloured Gi's will be permitted (e.g. blue)
How much are judo suits purchased through the club.
We have two main types of judo suit available through the club. Natural cotton and Bleached. The prices for these suits depends on the size ordered. Please check with the club for the latest prices.
Why do I have top have insurance.
In today’s modern age insurance is mandatory to protect students, the club and its instructors. Any student not taking out insurance will not be permitted onto the mat in either club. All insurances will run through NAKMAS
Who are NAKMAS?
NAKMAS is the National Association of Karate and Martial Arts Schools. They are a national governing body within the UK and are recognised as a professional body by the UK sports council. All instructors registered with NAKMAS are CRB checked and accredited instructors to ensure the safety of all students, particularly the young and vulnerable.
How qualified are my instructors.
Both the current instructors at MJC and DJC have considerable experience in Judo, Sensei S Morgan has been practicing Judo since 1980 and been teaching since 1998, Sensei G Morgan has been practicing Judo since 1994 and achieved his Dan grade in 2005. Both have achieved their respective grades via independent panel grading and had their grades recognised by NAKMAS.
How often do I have to train?
You can train as often or as little as you would like. Our advice is though the more you can train the more you will achieve. There is no stipulation on how much you should do.
How often do I grade?
Our aim is to have a minimum of six months between grading’s, and a maximum of two years between grading’s. We try and hold two grading’s per year to accommodate all students.
What type of grading will I have?
All students will undergo a technical grading in front of a panel of grading examiners. These can be from our existing club or from other clubs by request.
Do I have to grade?
In short no, it is purely up to the individual if they want to grade or not, your instructors will offer you the opportunity to grade when they think you are ready, if you do wish to they will accept your decision.
What type of Judo will I learn?
You will learn Kodokan Judo formulated by Dr Jigaro Kano. All aspects of Judo will be taught to you with an emphasis on the traditional side of Judo.
Can I attend both clubs?
Yes there is no restriction on attending either club.
I have a disability can I still train?
We welcome all potential students with no discrimination, in the case of students with disabilities; we will discus your requirements with you and see what individual arrangements if necessary can be made.
Are there any age restrictions?
We have an age restriction of 7 years of age, at present this is currently under review and may well be lifted, there are no upper age restrictions, and the only requirement is that a student has general good health.
Are spectators allowed in the Dojo?
At MJC due the narrowness of the dojo there are no spectators allowed other than the students first lesson, at DJC there is room for spectators so all are welcome, although we do request that spectators leave the teaching of judo to the instructors.
