Welcome to Maindee and Duffryn Judo Clubs. Based in Newport, South Wales. Established 1998.
Kodokan Judo was founded by Professor Jigoro Kano in 1882, a student of Jujutsu; Kano studied both the Tenjin Shinyo-ryu and Kito-ryu styles of classical Jujitsu. By integrating what Kano believed to be the positives points of these styles and with his own ideas and inspirations, Kano developed a new style of Martial Art. He transformed the traditional jujutsu principal of “defeating strength through flexibility” into a new principal of “maximum efficient use of physical and mental energy”
The essence of which he expressed in the axiom “maximum efficient use of energy”. By the practical application this principal Kano felt it could contribute to human social development, including “mutual prosperity for self and others” which he considered the real goal of training.
To reflect this Kano replaced ‘jutsu’ (technique) in the word ‘ju-jutsu’ with the suffix ‘do’ (path) to create a new name for his art: JUDO. (The Gentle Way). His first Dojo (training hall) was found in Eishoji Temple he named ‘Ko-do-kan,’ or ‘a place to teach the path.’
At Maindee and Duffryn Judo clubs in Newport our aim is to teach Judo by following the examples set by Professor Kano and for students to learn is a safe and enjoyable manor the art of Judo. It is hoped you will not only learn the techniques of Judo but some of the philosophies Kano used as a means of bettering ourselves as individuals. There are no expectations for super athletes, or for students to progress rapidly through the grades. If students do not wish to grade that is their choice and respected by the club and its instructors.
Although we are a completely non-profit making club we are extremely fortunate that we have a number of instructors who are willing to give up their spare time to help students learn Judo.
Our Chief Instructor of both clubs and senior instructor at Maindee Judo Club is Sensei Steve Morgan 3rd Dan; he has been a student of Judo since 1980. Our senior instructor at Duffryn Judo Club is Sensei Gareth Morgan 2nd Dan, he has been a student of Judo since 1995.
